Obviously designed for and marketed as a cold weather oil for heavy diesels. It is also labeled as meeting JASO standards for use in motorcycles with wet clutches. I use it in a Yamaha FZ for easier starting and less wear during fall, winter and early spring.

Advantages of Rotella 5w-40 over motorcycle specific oil? Price and a more robust additive package.

Advantages over automotive (energy conserving) oil? Far less, or none, of the "energy conserving" additives that cause slippage and wear of wet clutches and improved shear resistance.

I use this in my 90K mile Kawasaki Concours. In most motorcycles the oil lubricates the motor and transmission. With traditional (dinosaur) oil the transmission starts shifting a little harder once the oil reaches 2,500 miles - with this oil however the transmission shifts smooth as silk for much longer intervals than the 2,500 miles I was accustomed to.

Love this stuff in my Honda 400EX ATV, a machine known to be tough on oil and a notchy transmission. I've tried OEM Honda oil, Lucas MC oil, and even the super expensive Amsoil and after having mediocre results from all of them I tried this stuff and what a night and day difference! My transmission now shifts smooth as butter! The oil stays clean a long time and appears to hold up well. This engine being air cooled runs hot, much hotter than the liquid cooled machines and riding around the dunes on a hot 90-100 degree summer day and pounding on it hard in the thick sand this oil has never faltered! From here on out, I won't use anything else! Although, I kinda wish there was a synthetic 15W-40 option because it would be more shear stable in my shared sump engine. I think the 5W-40 shears down to a 5W-30 pretty fast in a motorcycle.

I use Rotella in my PSD truck and two motorcycles - a Nomad 1700 and C50 Boulevard. This is a really tough, high quality motor oil that is built for heavy-duty applications. I don't believe any motorcycle brands specifically recommend this oil, but SOPUS does state it meets JASO-MA for wet clutch applications. Regardless, my motorcycles love this stuff. The bikes shift well and the oil still looks great after 5k miles of use. Save yourself some $$ buy using TTT or T6 in your motorcycles.

This oil really is phenomenal, I use it in my motorcycles and I have not been able to find a better oil for the price, nothing makes my bikes ride nicer than running them on Rotella T6. The price is excellent and the oil is high quality, I use it in my 2009 Ninja 500R and my 2011 Yamaha R1 and I highly recommend this for ANY sport bike out there! It is such a good oil for anything with a wet/slipper clutch. I can't speak for how well it works in trucks but I highly recommend for motorcycles!

Have used this exclusively in my past three motorcycles, including my present BMW R1150RT (an oilhead, which is primarily air-cooled), which specifies 15W50 or 20W50 oil. I have discovered that it provides superior flow characteristics when cranking on those five-degree-F mornings. It also has been fine when crossing the country on 105+ deg-F days. My BMW has over 120,000 miles on this oil, with nominal valve-adjustment issues and maintains high leak-down pressure check results. Some users report it may not be suitable for vehicles with catalytic converters. The user should consult with Shell Oil Co. for such inquiries.
